The Global Youth Service Day was celebrated on April 17, on Floresti town square. The purpose of the activity was to promote volunteering and social help among teens and give a support to the children with special needs, by implementing a Volunteering project „Don’t make a difference”. Project participants offered help to the “Corn of Happiness” NGO, being a part of team working to renovate the center for children with disabilities. The project was implemented by 15 teenagers from grades 7th-11th. School administration, local authorities, the local NGO supported the students to implement this project. At the end of the activity, the “Corn of Happiness” NGO organized an “Open House” event and all the volunteers were awarded with certificates.
”The students practiced and developed their English skills by creating different presentations using web-tools, short-movies and posts on their blogs. I wish their effort will inspire you to show your best in the community.” More detais on the school blog: http://tatianadragan.weebly.com/iearn/global-youth-service-day-in-floresti |

We organised various activities between April, 11 and April, 22 coordinated by 20 students from 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades. One group taught little children, another group presented projects about their villages. Small groups of three and five students cleaned the park around the monument and the school’s garden and helped an old woman to whitewash the trees in her garden. Parents helped with tools and money for transportation while collecting pictures from other villages. Students enjoyed a lot the activities they participated in and are open to do other things for our community. They understood that it is not difficult to help other people and some of them told their English became better after they taught it as they had to be good enough to teach others. They also became good users of such online tools as Prezi, Powtoon, Blabberize, Stupeflix, etc. They shared their impressions and at the moment there are new volunteers who ask about new iEARN projects to participate in. Our reporter took a lot of pictures we will share through our class blog:

"Save the Earth by Small Deeds" was the motto of our project. We celebrated Global Youth Service Day by doing three activities, planting, cleaning the surroundings, collecting paper and other recycling materials and working with elderly people. Different duties were assigned to different people. For example, some participants were responsible for taking students to the right location, others were in charge of taking photographs, mentoring and making handout. We selected a park which is nearby our school and cleaned it. Students and teachers brought plants with them and they planted them in the park. While visiting the "Gills Shelter for Elderly", we took different games and gifts to the elderly and organized small activities for them. It was a nice experience for our students to improve the society where they live in. Teachers, parents and school administration helped us a lot. Parents asked children to work on Sunday and the school management provided logistical support. The event would have been incomplete without the support of the entire community. We are planning to tell other people about the project by organizing an awareness session for the other people in our school auditorium.

"My students and I enjoyed very much celebrating Global Youth Service Day and, even though we were only 9, we worked hard and with great pleasure, beginning with the photo introduction and ending with the project video. We called our Project "My School, My Community and Me". As we have already mentioned in the project plan, we celebrated GYSD planting flowers and trees in our school yard and helping an old blind woman with household duties from our village Singereii Noi. We did this in two days: on the 15.04.2017 and on the 20.04.2017. This idea was given to us by the community social workers. Because students participants in the projects remained very pleased after volunteering, we are going to visit this woman again and even some other old people from our community to give them our help. "Our project was about recycling toilet paper rolls and plastic. It involved 18 students. We decided to teach kids about recycling so we chose the Kindergarten “Prichindel” and had the activity on April 15. The students made some posters about recycling to make an introduction for kids in order to understand what recycle is, then they worked together with the kids on making nice and funny toys of toilet paper rolls and plastic. The administration of the kindergarten and the educators and parents were our partners and helped us with the organization of the event. This is what my students say: “Our group decided that in our country pollution is a very big problem and we must change something. Of course changes begin with us, with children and with a young generation. Recycle is a good idea to help our environment. It is helpful and very easy. For the little kids of the kindergarten this thing was new and very interesting. First we told children what is recycling and how to make toys from the useless paper. After that we started working, children were happy because they have not done this until now. All children had different ideas but quite ingenious and Access group made ideas into reality, together with children. Only together we can save the planet!”

”My students started to organize the GYSD event by having a discussion to determine an area of need in their community’s environment. They had a meeting and discussion and after that they decided to plant flowers in front of the school. Their activity was divided in two parts. First students brought geranium plants and they planted them in small pots so they could adjust to the soil. At the same time, the biology teacher Raisa Craciun, sponsored the activity by providing colored chamomile, begonia and narcissus. On the 13th of April, 18 students had a wonderful lesson with a Peace Corps Volunteer Ashley Bussiere about the importance of participating in GYSD events in community, she also checked their essays that they wrote on this topic. On the 15th of April, 10 students from then 9th and 10th grades planted colored chamomile, begonia and narcissus in front of the school. During the event they had fun and discussed among themselves as well as helping each other when needed. On the 23rd of April, 15 students from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade planted geranium by the pathway at the entrance of the school. These students will also take care of the flowers during summer time and in winter they are going to replant them in pots and put on the windowsills in the school halls.”

We launched the Educational Project FUNNY ENGLISH FOR EVERYBODY in January. We decided to celebrate Global Youth Service Day on the 21st of April, when we had the final English lesson at the kindergarten. In order to make it very special we didn`t go to the kindergarten, but this time we invited the little kids to come to our school. So the lesson took place at our gymnasium. The pupils from the 4th form prepared a lot of funny and interesting activities and games for the children. We reviewed all the materiel studied during these four months. We sang, we danced, we played, we drew and all together we thanked iEngage Moldova and the Academy for Innovation and Change through Education for this great opportunity to teach English to kindergarten and to celebrate GYSD together with many other countries. The school pupils prepared even little souvenirs for kindergarten children to remember about the interesting project they were involved into.

Ecological ”Claca” (community event) in the context of GYSD took place on the 27th of April at " Olimp" High School from Anenii- Noi, Puhaceni. The goal was to help participants learn about public-service through practice and theory and develop patterns from cross-cultural and cross disciplinary perspectives. It is a tradition in the community to clean the school and village area before Easter. School Administration adjusted the activity to GYSD event; teachers helped students to divide the activities between them; parents provided participants with all necessary tools.
”Each of us realized the importance of public service aimed at making the community a better place to live in. I feel that the effect was promising. The service was tired to what young people are taught at school and at home. In conclusion, I would like to say that young people change the community each day of the year through service.” |
April, 23 had excellent weather for doing something extraordinary. 20 Access-Taraclia students and lots of volunteer students from our town celebrated the Global Youth Service Day by organizing a river clean-up event - altogether we were about 150 people. Our small local river is named GAIDABUL. It was extremely polluted. And we are happy to announce that after the cleaning event the level of pollution significantly changed - a result which was obtained due to students' enormous efforts and contribution. Access students had been getting prepared hard for this day. Besides the things they did by themselves in order to attract attention and raise up people’s awareness about the problem of river pollution, such as posters and fliers hanged everywhere in town and schools, and a promo video, they also managed to involve local TV, newspaper and radio station which were glad to help them in this noble initiative. A big contribution was made by our local authorities who bought us gloves and trash bags. We also were sponsored by The American Councils. The money they sent was spent on medicines and more equipment. A week before the cleaning event the local TV mentioned about it in the news program, and a similar article appeared in the local newspaper as well. In spite of the fact the clean-up day was postponed to the next weekend because of the weather conditions, we successfully celebrated the Global Youth Service Day. We've been discussing have a lot the problems we faced during implementing the project, we also talked with our mentor Nicholas, who is an amazing person and was completely open for questions concerning such difficulties. Now we can say for sure: such projects should be held as often as possible, because people need someone to start and lead them. And we are going to do our best in order to be this SOMEONE with hands bringing help to those who need it and a heart open for noble ambitions that move the society forward.

The Global Youth Service Day event in Edinet was organized by the team composed of Access ans Flex Alumni, "Salve" Volunteer Center and members of an NGO for young people with disabilities - “VIVERE”. After long discussions and the analysis of the situation in the town, the project idea and name was approved: “Peace and Tolerance”. Students created the logo for the project and put it on the flyers, made a poster with it and promoted it all over activities. The implementation was agreed to be fulfilled in 3 steps. Day #1 – was dedicated to the interview of people in the streets of the town on how they understand the words Peace and Tolerance and what does it mean for them. Our team-members put on their special T-shirts and hats with inscriptions, they also gave interviewee the flyer with the logo of the event. Day #2 and #3 – the team organized 2 trainings on the same topic for school children in 2 different lyceums. The activities were elaborated this way: warm-up activity;discussion on how kids understand the notions; watching the 2 short video in different languages and music on peace and tolerance impact;follow-up discussion; the kids got papers with definitions and logo and were to draw in colors how they see these notions; each kid had to write on the flip chart on the rays of the sun a word that symbolizes peace or tolerance for him/her; the last step was video-listening to the famous song by Michael Jackson “Black and White” in order to move a little bit and to leave the bright memory after the training together with the vivid understanding of the topic of the day. The final step was official awarding of certificates of participation and taking pictures. The sweets-cookies were provided along the activities. Every child seemed to be happy to take paper with definitions and logo and their certificate with smiles and new information. All the events within 3 days were video recorded and the pictures were taken step by step by our reporters. After the events, we organized a debriefing of the work, with discussion on the level of our implication in the change of the mentality and bringing into public the peaceful and tolerant attitude to one another. It was as well important for us to bring this information and learn from our own experience how to promote peaceful values and maintain it on the global scale.

We are a big family of volunteers, so we planned to do something good for our nature, our town and its citizens. So, we organized a Cleaning Up Day for Dondusheni. In this activity we involved all three lyceums from our town, the mayor and the administration of our small town and the sanitation team who were glad to help us in cleaning. Each lyceum cleaned a special zone. Our lyceum decided to take a zone full of trash, but at the same time very used by many of our people, especially for children. So, it is considered the zone through what people cross the railways to go to the second part of our town. It is called "the region of the sugar factory", because of the factory that had worked there before some years ago. All the students were very glad to participate in this activity. In spite of all the trash and unpleasant smell that they encountered, students were very responsible to their job. They approached to the idea of cleaning with very big understanding, and did it with deep awareness. All the students were engaged. the youngest cleaned the field of small pieces of trash not very dangerous for them. Them most difficult zones were cleaned by the secondary and high school students. Teachers and the administration of the lyceums were a good example for their students. We are thankful to the mayor of our town for the gloves and the bags for trash he prepared for us. Also he organized the transportation and the sanitation team. They were the indispensable part of our cooperation with our community. They helped our volunteers in doing a good and well-planned job.

Students from the 6th grade organised a cleaning activity on the 22nd of April - this turned to be a wonderful continuation of the campaign within the “Waste Wise School” Project. The campaign in its turn has become a new event for the lyceum community although we are proud that a great number of various events and activities are held in our lyceum. During the campaign 6th grade students conducted a waste assessment survey and waste audit, two “litter” and three “food that goes uneaten” raids, gave presentations to their peers and the students of elementary school, made very impressive posters. Of course, a lot of information about Global Youth Service Day was given. On the 22nd of April 16 volunteer students from 6th grade celebrated GYSD by cleaning the school yard, playgrounds and a nearby alley. Even though the event was held after classes, students worked hard and really enjoyed it. They were wearing blue gloves but claimed they thought green. So the mottos of the campaign “Let Us Be Green Hearts” and “Make Beautiful Things Happen” were brought to life. The students prove to be real young leaders who feel they can do something to change the world for the better. And though not all had the courage to become active participants of the event (we saw puzzled looks and astonished eyes), it made a lot of young people think of the problems of littering.

Environmental issue is one of the most up-to-date problems of our society as our surroundings are debasing day by day. The principal cause of all the environmental problems are people themselves, so ,on my mind they are the ones who should settle this matter. On the 23 of April I and 25 pupils from the Theoretical Lyceum "Boris Dinga" tried to solve this problem. So, in order to do our city a better place to live we have cleaned the local park from Criuleni. It was a great experience as for me as for my students, they were excited to do such a great and useful thing. Most of them said that they would have spent all the day in front of computer, but this experience was thrilling. We worked with the local authorities and workers of the city. So, we have done a marvelous thing for all the citizens of Criuleni city. I think that this action is a motivational thing for all the mankind, we are what we repeatedly do, so we should do great things for becoming great and significant people.

Gymnasium Nr 99
|
It was the 18 of April when 11 students from the 5th grade from Gymnasium no.99 decided to celebrate the GYSD event in our village. We focused on one well that urgently needed to be renovated . It was a well built years ago at a crossroad to appease the travelers, the villagers. When we got there the pupils were full of energy and desire to make a change, to serve their community the way they can .They had to perform quite a difficult job that they do not fulfill each day. To ease the work we had to divide the responsibilities. Some had to work with hoes, some had to work with paintbrushes and the others with the whitewashing brushes. While working some of them compared themselves with Tom Sawyer, others with the main heroine from the well known Romanian tale “ Fata babei si fata mosneagului” taking care of an old well. Although the work was challenging they faced it with responsibilities, dignity and joy. They combined business with pleasure. Some witnesses that passed by encouraged the developing of the event by praising them. They were felt proud of themselves.
